“Botanical Neglect”: Nature Based Solutions Walk
Time of the visits:
3:00 – 5:00 pm (English)
5:00 – 7:00 pm (Catalan)
The mountain of Montjuïc holds the oldest evidence of human settlement in Barcelona, witnessing thousands of years of inhabitation. Despite ongoing human activity, it has never fully urbanized, shifting roles from an Iberian citadel to a Jewish cemetery, from a quarry to a military compound, and from a refuge for outlaws and anarchists to a site of pilgrimage and retreat in its hermitages. In the late 19th century, efforts to integrate Montjuïc into city life led to the creation of gardens along a planned itinerary. Though the vision was never fully realized, the mountain now hosts over 20 parks and gardens.
This site visit will retrace the early stages of a now-lost Botanical Itinerary, starting at the Gardens of Walter Benjamin and Hortes de Sant Bertran, continuing through Forestier’s Stairs, Jardins de Mossèn Costa i Llobera, and Jardins de Miramar, before returning to Avinguda Paral·lel via Jardins de la Primavera. Along the way, we will explore the complex intersections of history, urban development, and social issues – addressed through the simplest of means: “Botanical Neglect.”
