Mar d’Ombres: Ephemeral shading in public space

Times of the visits:
3:00 – 3:45 pm (Catalan)
4:00 – 4:45 pm (English)

The visit to the “Mar d’Ombres” installation will offer the opportunity to discover this innovative ephemeral shading solution and its impact on urban spaces. During the tour, the context and motivation behind the project will be explained, as well as its technical features, from the materials used to the structural system and its ability to adapt to different environments. This prototype has been developed within the framework of Barcelona’s Climate Emergency Action Plan 2030, which includes the “Barcelona, City of Shade” program. This initiative, driven by the Urban Ecology Department, aims to create more shaded areas through vegetation, multifunctional urban furniture, and seasonal textile elements, especially in areas lacking green urban spaces. In this context, the BIT Habitat Foundation promoted an urban challenge to find innovative solutions that generate temporary, modular, and sustainable shading.

During the visit, data collected during the prototype testing period will be presented, including temperature variations and solar radiation levels, in order to evaluate its effectiveness in improving thermal comfort. The results of surveys conducted with users of the space will also be shared, providing better insight into their perception and experience of use.
